I'm offering
I am operating a small design led practice, specialising in residential work. I am a qualified and insured architectural designer with over 10 years experience in the building and design industry, working with award- winning architectural practices.
I have worked on both residential and commercial projects in the past, listed properties also within conservation areas, at various scale developments.
I set up my own practice as I enjoy working with private clients and felt that I could offer a more personal service, attention to detail and a wealth of ideas based on many years experience. I aim to listen carefully and create simple, contemporary architecture with an emphasis on light and careful use of materials. I have a genuine interest in building technology and performance. My technical approach and creativity play an important role in deciding upon construction techniques and aesthetics.
I think every project should be crafted with care and attention to detail, to create something really special and I aim to surpass my client’s expectations of what they can achieve, while making sure that you are spending your budget the right way. I also hope to make the experience of designing and building something as enjoyable as possible.
I cover every aspect of planning, prepare CAD drawings both 2D and 3D, design documents required for building control and planning, structural engineering. I offer a fast delivery of your project, excellent communication, and fixed prices.
Loft conversions, Kitchens, Sustainable design, Joinery design, Extensions, Planning applications, Re-planning / Internal alterations, New builds, Accessible design

loft- extension, side dormers, Permitted Development Rights
k+c studio.
The property has had previous extensions, so we had to discount that increase in the volume of the resulting roof space under Permitted Development Rights.
Through Building control application, a Lawful Development Certificate obtained.
We proposed a formation of two rooms in roof space with side dormers and raised roofline, reinforcement of the floor and addition of new staircase.
Oak brings texture and character to this new extension that both complements the building and enhances the owner’s joy of being at home. Raised eaves significantly increase the usable floor space in the rooms.
In collaboration with a third party oak frame design company, a structural oak- framed extension was pre- fabricated off- site which speeded up the construction time. As a consequence, time on- site was also significantly reduced.
The client chose the clean, modern look of softwood rafters hidden behind plasterboard. The oak frame is encased within structural insulated panels to meet Building Regulation standards for thermal efficiency. Exterior cladding to meet existing materials.

new built- Conservation Area
k+c studio.
Planning Permission gained on this relatively small, 49m2 footprint proposal.
The client ideally pursued to build a two-bedroom ’cottage- looking’ house that fits within its environment in the context of a conservation area.
Driven by the desire to get more built volume out of an expensive site, restricted by planning policies and ridge height, we decided to sink the building half a storey into the ground and complete it with a 15° pitch roof.
The floorplan is arranged so that habitable rooms get priority of daylight, the top floor incorporates multiple lightwells and side dormers.
On the southern elevation, small courtyard garden with glass French doors allows daylight to reach throughout the open-plan layout.

re- wamp- Planning permission
k+c studio.
This roughly rectangular 20m2 plan was carved out of a previously many times re-configured neo-renaissance floor plan, in order to create smaller accommodations within the building to better suit contemporary needs.
The high ceilinged apartment traditionally called for a mezzanine installation for the bed. This loft apartment, however, had unique opportunities held by the roof cavity. The bed has slotted into the dormant space beneath the roof, creating a separate bedroom.
The alternating thread staircase allowed to save approximately half the going distance of a normal flight of stairs without compromising comfort or safety, maximising the living space further.
As a result, the plan allows for a fully-equipped kitchen and a comfortable living space.

side return- Permitted Development Rights
k+c studio.
The property had it’s Permitted Development Rights retained which the owners wanted to exercise.
The original layout of this Victorian end-of-terrace property in many ways reflects a bygone social structure with smaller separate rooms and separate kitchen that did not lend itself to contemporary living.
The clients wanted to reform their family home without having a dramatic effect on the flow of the interior layout or end up with a narrow, fairly restricted spaces. They also wanted to maximise the amount of natural light enters the building.
The relatively tight site boundary provided a promising opportunity to wrap the extension around the small courtyard. This created a better-proportioned and more usable space, also maintain the important connection with the front garden via existing side gate.
The employment of full glazing at the back, both enabled partitions to disappear and a much better connection between the interior space and the garden. To the joy of our clients, this means that they are being able to expand their dining area outdoors in summer.

loft extension- Area of Special Interest
k+c studio.
Our client decided that she wanted the chimney breasts removed in the loft in order to lose less space of the bedroom below, following the introduction of a new, fully encased stairwell. As chimney breasts are both conduits through which smoke passes and structural elements of the building, the chimney stack needed to be supported at the flat roof level. Removing the chimney stacks would have disturbed the geometry of the street as would have been inconsistent with the local vernacular.
The dormer is usually a timber frame construction but in this scenario extra steelwork needed to be included that slightly elevated the costs in agreement with our client.
External cladding materials were used to match the existing conditions, the transformation of roof from hip to gable construction and with the new loft volume remained slightly under 50m2 allowance, this conversion was built under Permitted Development Rights.
Party Wall Agreement and structural drawings were developed by our recommended professionals.
