I am a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years’ experience gained in the aerospace, marine and defence
industries, predominantly in mechanical design.
Over the course of my career I have applied my design skills to a variety of different products and
requirements, from high precision aerospace parts produced with cutting edge manufacturing processes
to structural steel fabrications, adapting my approach to suit.
For the last 10 years I have specialised in Design for Additive Manufacture (AM), working both as a
Design Engineer and as a Research Engineer directly with powder bed machines. My particular interest
lies with the possibilities of optimising part geometry, putting material only where it is needed, whilst
minimising post-processing time and costs. I understand what can be achieved with AM and how to
design for the process but also to consider subsequent conventional manufacturing operations. Another
important aspect of a successful AM part, from my experience, is how it interfaces with adjacent
components; my varied design background allows me to address “real world” issues such as clearances
for joining methods and assembly, fixturing, threads and fasteners / standard parts.
With a multi-CAD system background, I am able to create easily editable models and drawings with
complex geometry, whilst minimising file size and allowing efficient data reuse.
