job
Financial Management Accountant
Pret A Manger Europe Limited.
• Each month reports are sent out to my budget holders with actual spend vs budgeted spend. When I joined, I wanted to improve these reports and ensure that each of my budget holders understood the information they were getting and how they could act on the information provided. Therefore, I arranged meetings with the budget holders individually and created custom reports with them so that they could understand their costs better.
• A key part of my role when I joined was improving the month end process for my specific role. I worked through each of the processes and streamlined these by utilising excel more efficiently or our accounting software. This has helped to reduce human error and make month end quicker.
• I helped to prepare the operating cost budget for 2020 which is one of the biggest expenses for the business. This involved speaking with a variety of budget holders to understand any future developments which could affect costs. Looking at past results, for example costs which had been over/under budgeted in the past and why these variances occurred.
• Producing department monthly management accounts with detailed variance analysis and commentary and presenting these to the FD. This also acted as an opportunity to determine which costs needed to be controlled.
• Answering any p&l queries from the shop managers as well as the operational directors. This meant having to describe movements without using any technical accounting terms.

job
Financial Management Accountant
Busaba Eathai Limited.
• Partnering with the marketing team to produce ROI reports and determine whether the project is profitable such as Deliveroo, city pantry and gift cards. This involved producing cashflow forecasts and negotiating with suppliers to get the best commission rates. Similarly, any projects that went ahead required balance sheet reconciliations produced from scratch so that the correct accounting treatment was applied.
• Partnering with the operational team to design reports to show inefficiencies of labour cost.
• Preparing analysis of product margins and product popularity to determine which products should be cut or marketed more heavily.
• Training other members of the team. For example, one member was studying towards ACA so I taught him how to do basic balance sheet recs and reporting. This provided a practical learning opportunity for them during their accountancy exams whilst also improving their overall performance at work.
• Leading the year end audit. Providing evidence and calculations for the auditors to use as well as managing my accounts team to ensure that all audit requests were met on time.
• Conducting a balance sheet "clear up". Many balance sheet balances were incorrect due to carried forward errors and never being reconciled. So the FD and myself worked through all of these one by one to ensure that all balances were correct at year end.
• The board of directors requested new reports to help control costs, such as weekly sales reports, labour effectiveness reports and head office spend reports, These were developed from scratch using complex excel formulas whilst also ensuring the final reports were user friendly.
• To ensure the accounts team ran smoothly when someone was on annual leave, I learnt a little bit of everyone's function. Therefore I could cover that role when that person was on holiday ensuring the team continued to operate successfully.
• Preparing the individual restaurants P&Ls on a monthly basis, which included actual spend for the month vs budgeted spend. Meetings were held with the relevant managers to talk through their P&L for the month, which meant simplifying accountancy terms.
• Improving the month end process so that month end could be completed in 3 days rather than 2. I also developed excel spreadsheets which would help automate some processes -these not only made month end quicker but also reduced human error.
