Whilst, had negotiated a much improved package, the main incentive was the progression to Estimating Manager, which had been intimated at the outset. Due to company structural changes the position was never offered. Although had been recommended for promotion to Estimating Manager under the division of "Major Projects", this division was merged back into the main company structure. The second significant factor that occurred was that "Design and Build" Estimating was merged with traditional estimating. Position remains as Senior Estimator with a "managing" role on Design and Build tenders. Reported directly to the Chief Estimator. The experience gained in tendering has been extremely progressive (Acquiring hotel success @17M, Piazza, Manchester, Retail parks @6M Call Centre @12M) & Health&Safety HQ.Buxton(D&B) @48M, lost to Shepherd Construction.
In January, 2002 gained promotion to Estimating Manager.At this time there were four members in the team. Have been involved with successfully developing 'conquest estimating electronic system
Have also, in liason with our Procurement dept developed and implemented a 'Coins' subcontractor &supplier selection system.
During the past 4 years my department has been successful in acquiring a new High Density Storage building at Boston Spa Library(£14M), a new school at Rossington school(£18M) and a new Technology building at Rotherham £6M).
As at April, 2008 my role became broader as I was given the Midlands region as well as the Northern region as Estimating Manager.
Successful tender highlights include a £5M Circa Junior School in Wakefield(Traditional BQ) along with a £60M Circa Technical College in the Kirklees area(2 Stage Design&Build) traditional BQ -Pudsey Bus Station Circa £2M.In addition to this we secured a Framework agreement for Severn Trent -O/A value £70M shared over 4 years by 3 contractors. Progressed to contract on an Arcade refurbishment in Leeds City Centre, Circa £3M in value, West Yorkshire Police Custody Suites value Circa £4M-Successful (NEC3)& Ridgewood School, Doncaster value circa £5.50M(NEC3).Had experience in pricing Alterations at Wakefield High Security Prison circa £9.00M
Accepted offer of Voluntary redundancy .Three months later Allenbuild made the decision to cease tendering in Yorkshire/Midllands/North West areas due to the volatile market place.

A more significant development was the amount of "Design and Build" schemes undertaken. This included work for British Aerospace up to the value of £10M. Retail Parks to the value of £8M, ASDA supermarket developments to the value of £9M. A high degree of success was achieved, attaining about "1in3" success rate of jobs tendered in completion. Now felt that the time was right for progress to the next level. I.e. Estimating Manager, this opportunity was not available at Ballast.

The further incentive was the opportunity to price the larger scale schemes. The experience gained ranged from £1.5M to £20M. In this time a high degree of success was achieved in acquiring Retail Parks upto the value of £9M. The highlight included the pricing of Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Newcastle, £20M in value.

This was definitely a progressive career move. The "Estimating" system was the most efficient and comprehensive used to date. The actual tendering experience was extremely varied both in terms of type of work and geographical location. The "Estimating" function was centralised serving the whole country. Pricing jobs up to the value of £5M. Examples included the "house" for the Duke and Duchess of York £3.5M, Office Development for Capital & Countries £5M, Retail Parks in the region of £3M to £4M. With this experience, felt that promotion to Senior Estimator level was justified indeed this was subsequently offered by Shepherd. However, already had a more attractive offer from Tarmac Construction.

This involved initiating cost plans, feasibility studies and the measurement and valuation of live schemes progressed to site in October 1984, Comben were bought by Trafalgar House Group, as a consequence was relocated to Don aster to Northern Ideal Homes (part of T H Group). This post lasted a further 3 months until redundancy in Jan 1985.
