job
Data Developer/ Data Engineer
Zurich Insurance.
I have been hired (part remote contract) as a BI developer on an insurance datawarehouse designed around Data Vault modelling, provisioning datasets for financial and risk modelling. C#, BIML, SSIS, SQL etc were the normal daily tools for development. The client used BIML for DataMart generation, and a proprietary c# framework for main warehouse load activities. I was tasked to generate new DataMart's and work the framework to load new areas of the warehouse. Work has followed agile methodology with 2 week sprints and Trello management of work items.
My role has involved significant end user engagement to gather datamart requirements, and implement new features across into existing marts. Source control has been git bitbucket, with pull requests & peer reviews managing code quality on the feature branch before merge into the collaboration branch for further testing & release. Trello has been used to manage the workload across the team.
I have been tasked with a significant piece of work building a new Azure Devops build and release processing, building the infrastructure and pipelines to manage all the mart and warehouse builds across the mart and warehouse load code. On premise azure devops server was used, and the solution provided was a replacement to the existing bamboo solution. The solution allowed CI/CD with across dev/sit/preprod/prod environments with use of authorized gateway approvals to control release in the various environments.
This piece of work brings major benefits to the release cycle within Zurich, helping the organization move away from a bottlenecked, largely manual process to a much faster, more efficient, controlled release cycle.
Azure Devops , Azure Repos, Arm Templates, Azure Key Vault, Visual Studio Code, SQL Server 2016,SQL Server 2014, c#, BIML SSIS,Json, Data Vault. Git, Bitbucket, Trello

Senior Bi Developer
Computershare.
I have been hired as a BI developer (part remote) on a large data warehouse and migration project handling UKAR mortgage and loan assets (Blackstone/Prudential/Landmark/Whistelree assets). The data has been migrated onto in house systems (Iconnect), and loaded into the Midas warehouse.
My role has involved responsibilities for warehouse loads on Ripon migration and various re-engineering exercises on existing SSIS packages to handle revised functionality e.g. CAIS CRA reporting, GDPR , scale and fix (performance tuning) and reconciliation. The first migration of Ripon assets was successfully completed in February 2018, and subsequent work has been for the follow up migration of Landmark/Whistletree assets.
My day to day work involves SSIS and SQL as the primary tools, with some usages of SSRS and work on OLAP cubes. My major piece of work in the past 4 months has been the rework of CAIS (Credit Reference Agencies) reporting to cater for the reporting of unsecured loans and working with multiple work streams to deliver the end solution. All work undertaken in an agile working environment, daily scrums.

Database Developer / DBA
unknown.
I have worked on a number of SQL Server 2005, 2008 and 2008 R2 database projects, working directly for end clients. I have developed several reporting solutions for clients based around Reporting Services 2008 R2, designing complex Tablix and Matrix reports with charts and gauges and scheduled report delivery of PDF output via email. Reports have been developed for oil industry and recruitment industry end users.
I have worked on a number of migrations, using SSIS as the ETL to control and manage the data migration. The solutions have been required to extract, transform and load data from existing legacy systems into the new SQL Server 2008 R2 databases.
I have undertaken several short term consultancy assignments (2 weeks duration) to help with performance issues (identifying and resolving bottlenecks) on Sql Server 2005 and 2008 databases. These include assignments for the Health Protection Agency to resolve system deadlocks on their Fatwire CMS, and work for 4Mat (a software house developing Recruitment Agency Solutions) to tune and provide recommendations on database system following poor performance issues. Wait Statistics, Query plan analysis, index analysis, trace flags and SQL Server DMV's were used extensively to detail and then resolve database issues. Fundamental database design issues were highlighted to 4Mat.

DBA/Developer
I have been employed to build an n-tier insurance application to replace existing access databases and spreadsheets. I have been responsible for design & development of both database and application - we have used an agile approach with daily scrums conducted by the team leader, and fortnightly iterations supported by Use case documentation, and have delivered a functionally rich application with full audit trails and multi user functionality. The database has been modeled from scratch following walkthrough Use Cases that were delivered from user meetings. I created and maintained a logical/physical model using Erwin, and then physically implemented in SQL Server 2005. As new insurance policy type modules were delivered, the model was updated to reflect new data items and entities. The data migration has been achieved through the use of a number of complex SSIS packages. Reports have been designed and developed to output a variety of detailed insurance policy documents.

Database Developer / DBA Fitness First
unknown.
I have worked as the development DBA, supporting the 5 developers in a .Net/ Agile environment. My role has involved designing the enterprise database, taking inputs from the business user cases, and the system architect. To enable fast turnaround from requirements to SQL Scripts, I have made full use of the ERWin data modeling tool to create a highly normalized Logical/Physical model. Every two weeks new database scripts based on the updated model have been delivered for the next iteration. I have additionally been tasked with the creation of stored procedures for developers use, as well as more standard DBA duties of creating backup and restores. The development has followed the Agile methodology with daily standups and fortnightly sprints run by the project leader Scrum Master. My role essentially involved the creation of logical and physical database models and then physical database schemas to support the many use cases, in conjunction with directions from the system architect.

I have been employed to work on the OMI project - outsourcing a pensions administration system for Old Mutual International. The work has involved innovative development in a number of business areas - Data Warehousing, Treasury Settlement, Banking Interfaces and Dynamics (Great Plains) interfaces. Designing and developing against SQL Server 2000 servers, the bulk of the system has been developed server side using Transact SQL. My work has been part of a 7 person team. A significant part of my role has been in the enhancements on a variety of SQL Servers, from versions 6.5 to 2000., and re-engineering interfaces to the Doc1 document management system to allow processing of updated data structures. I have been involved in re-engineering the accounting functionality of the system, and have re-engineered transact SQL to cope with FAIS (IFA) legislation in South Africa. All SQL Server code releases have been managed under Unisys change control procedures. Updates to the data warehouse to reflect new measures and output via the custom reporting tool have been another important aspect of the role.

Senior SQL Server BI Developer/DBA
Eldridge Pope Brewery, Dorset.
I have worked on re-engineering the company's data warehouse and developed the application to handle weekly sales and banking imports from the company's public houses. Developing OLAP cubes for the Head Office Finance users has involved dimension/Measure/cube/virtual cube design design on three cubes - budget, sales and accounts, together with the design of Business Object Reports based on the cubes. I have worked with MDX to provide calculated measures, and have gained a solid understanding of Analysis Services and how it can be used to benefit the company. For example, I have worked with business product specialists who have provided outline requirements on measures, rollups and dimensions needed for their business area. From this, I have taken the requirement, looked at the current import processes and worked through modifications & additions to measures and dimensions, processed the cube and made any necessary changes to fixed business objects reports. Data imports into the staging database & data warehouse itself have been controlled by multi step sql jobs, with full audit trail to track processing issues. I have been charge of the production SQL Server environment, monitoring the ETL and cube build processes, and taking action as necessary.
