job
Marketing & Communications Director
St Austell Brewery.
St Austell Brewery is a leading independent, family-owned brewer, pub company and composite wholesaler delivering £190m turnover and £13.8m operating profit in 2018.
Part of the Senior Management Team, I established and led a multi-disciplinary marketing and communications team responsible for development and delivery of marketing and communications strategy - including cross-channel campaigns, digital marketing, innovation and product development, PR, events and sponsorships. I led marketing activity to grow St Austell Brewery and Bath Ales beer portfolios in the on-trade, off-trade and export markets, as well as providing marketing campaigns and communications to support the 179-strong pub estate and free trade composite wholesale business.
I was responsible for online sales of beers and the award-winning brewery visitor centre. In the last decade St Austell Brewery sales volumes have trebled and in 2018 St Austell Brewery was rated as the best known and loved brewery in the South West.
Key achievements
• In 2019 led Project Refresh, a complete brand review of the St Austell brewing and brands business to understand true profit contribution by brand, channel and SKU as well as the key market opportunities. Project Refresh has informed the new 5-year sales, marketing and production strategic plan.
• 2018 led company-wide project to identify and articulate the new company mission, vision and values establishing a new brand story that spans all parts of the St Austell Family Group (including St Austell Brewery and bath Ales) and will guide the company's strategy and behaviours for the future.
Beer brands
• In 2017 repositioned Tribute through new packaging and tone of voice plus £500k Quality Speaks for Itself campaign (including POS, digital, cinema advertising) returning the brand to growth in the UK's pubs and supermarkets while retaining premium pricing. Helped establish Tribute as UK top-10 premium ale in both the on-trade and off-trade sectors, growing cask sales by 10% in a declining market.
• In September 2018 this success was recognised when Tribute won Best Integrated Marketing Campaign at the 2018 Beer and Cider Marketing Awards. St Austell Brewery was also recognised as the best beer marketer in the UK picking up the Beer and Cider Marketing Grand Prix.
• Positioned Tribute as beer of SW rugby - and activated key sponsorships.
• In 2018, refreshed Proper Job brand design and communications to appeal to younger demographic and to harness its improving distribution; helping to establish Proper Job as the UK's best-selling bottle-conditioned beer and one of Britain's most popular and fastest growing cask IPAs. Proper Job is also the number 1 imported British beer in France.
• In 2011 created the brand proposition and launched Korev lager, one of the first new-wave English lagers. Success was achieved by positioning Korev as the official beer of British surfing. In 2019 sales grew by 27% driven by new packaging and font design and supported by PR, digital and sponsorship of Luke Dillon and Lucy Campbell, the UK's top surfers, as well as sponsorship of key South West music festivals.
• Following the acquisition of Bath Ales In 2016, integrated the marketing teams and plans to improve efficiency and productivity. In 2018 led repositioning, redesign and refresh of Bath Ales branding, POS, packaging to coincide with the opening of the new Bath Ales brewery.
• In 2018, having identified a gap in our portfolio for a premium quality lower ABV lager, developed and launched Sulis, a 4.2% premium English lager. In its first 4 months it outperformed expectations achieving listings in Tesco and over 300 South West bars and restaurants.
• In 2019 repositioned and relaunched Bath Ales Monterey pale ale to meet the growing demand for US-inspired premium keg pale ales.
Retail marketing
• Introduced Revenue Management and central reservations team (achieving £8.4m revenue; 3.7% up on budget and 5.8% up on 2018). Achieving industry leading revpar. Acquiring customers through digital marketing, social, email and OTAs.
• Introduced digital marketing, data and campaign led approach to grow revenue in the managed pub estate - using a combination of paid digital, organic, PR and database marketing.
• Rejuvenated and developed the St Austell Brewery Visitor centre - from £750k to a £1.5m turnover visitor attraction that other brewers seek to emulate. In 2018 launched Bath Ales taproom and tours.
• Launched www.staustellbreweryshop.co.uk in 2010 to provide online home delivery service for St Austell beers, achieving £1m net sales annually.
Corporate and people achievements
• Introduced employee engagement surveys to the company to gauge culture and internal brand. Acting on results has helped achieve best in class levels of employee engagement.
• Have reduced reliance on external agencies bringing key skills in-house (graphic design, PR, events management, digital, content, web support and development) to provide an internal agency service, saving over £200k per year while increasing productivity and improving service levels to internal customers.
