Mechanical Design Engineer
HCED LTD.
HCED LTD is my company. Through it I have taken on contracts small and large providing design services. Delivering
projects based on pre agreed timelines. Being self-employed requires independence and commitment to active projects to ensure they are all completed to a deadline, with the highest quality to ensure the continuation of work. My main
contract from November has been with Caterpillar designing large generator units. I have completed other work for
companies as secondary to this main role.
Caterpillar
- As part of the solutions team I design customised generator units to fit the specific needs of a company. This
starts with a brief to understand the required specification. As this is a solutions department the machines will
always require new innovative customised parts to fit the needs of a customer.
- Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication is important in this role. Calculations of air flow, temperature, sound and
pressure are also carried out at the start of the design to meet standards and figures highlighted in the specification.
- The generator units weigh on average 40-60 tonnes. Therefore, practical thinking and knowledge of heavy
manufacture is important.
Conveyortek
- Conveyortek are a specialist conveyor manufacturer. Again, this company's model is not based on standard
product but customising the machine and layout to suit specific needs of a customer. As before this requires
innovation throughout the project.
- I have designed three conveyor systems for conveyortek. Two were used in a recycling plant and the other for
bulk handling of stones.
Self
- I have partnered with a lecturer and physio therapist to create an innovative product that we hope will solve an
ongoing issue effecting human posture. The product is in its early concept design phase.

job
Design & Development Engineer
Creative Composites.
- Creative composites are a manufacturer of premium/high performance advanced composites mostly for the automotive sector.
- I was a design and development engineer working mostly for one specific customer. This customer is one of the most notable supercar manufacturers and formula 1 teams in the world. This company was one of a few
supercar manufacturers who partnered with creative composites.
- My role was to design SMC tooling, RTM tooling, VARTM tooling, CNC fixtures, assembly jigs and transport
stillages. Fixtures and jigs used pneumatics, so previous employment experience assisted me greatly with these
designs.
- Altering component and panel design for better manufacture was common. Draft analysis and flow analysis
were carried out on parts leading to design change proposals.
- In creative composites I was expected to handle the project in its entirety. Assessing what was required in terms
of tooling, jigs and stillages based on a budget set by the customer. Prices were negotiated with suppliers based on what I had designed. Changes in tooling design, fixture design and processes were common in order to meet
a budget. The project timing and scheduling was fully managed by me. Before the start of manufacture, full
manufacturing steps and quality processes were written and issued to the shop floor. Training was then given to each of the staff assigned to the build.

Mechanical Design Engineer
Sepha.
Sepha is a manufacturer of machinery used in the pharmaceutical and food industry. They had three type of machine: leak detection, product removal/deblistering and production. All Sepha machines are electro-
pneumatically operated.
- At Sepha I was a part of the R&D team assisting in the development of machinery. My main development work
was done on the Visionscan V3 which is widely used as a leak detection machine around the world.
- Within the R&D team rapid prototyping was common for new machine parts or for tooling used in new
machines.
- I also designed the tooling needed for or released machines. These tools would be specific to customer
packaging.
- During my time at Sepha I travelled solely to customer sites very often. This was to complete installs and provide training on the machinery at all levels (operators, management, servicing staff, I.T). During my time
there I would complete installation and operational qualifications as well.
- I was sent to many global trade shows to represent Sepha. I am a social person with a passion for the
equipment. This was recognised by Sepha as I would be known to sell other machines when sent on site to complete installs.

internship
Intern Automation Engineer
KCI/Acelity.
KCI, Athlone is the site I worked at. This where they manufacture VAC machines (Vacuum Assisted Closure).
Their devices were mainly used to heal wounds and burns.
- This was my first experience of rapid automated production and all that was involved in it i.e automated
machinery, lean/six sigma and quality.
- Within the automation team I supported senior engineers with line and product problem solving. I created the daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly production reports for management also.
- Along with an American colleague based in Texas I ran tests on various solvents as part of a problem-solving
task. A mobile VAC device was seeing continuous leaks where a spigot and pipe connected. This issue was
solved. I was heavily involved in this project near the end of my placement.

job
Design & Development Engineer
Moteam Automation.
- A challenging placement that was my first introduction to automation and design of real equipment.
- I assisted a senior design engineer with a project for Randox. The machine was an automated line to produce
blood testing capsules. I assisted by producing models and drawings of components.
- I was involved in the introduction and testing of new software to one of Montupet's automated production lines.
Assisting the software engineer with HMI layouts for the control of the line. I then would have tested the software a lot of the time solely.
