After returning to Johannesburg I enrolled at the Professional Drafting Service for a six
month drafting course. At the end of the course I passed an exam and received my
Professional Drafting certificate. After I completed my studies I was employed by a company
called Laserfab as a full time draftsman in their Laser Cutting Department. My duties
included the drawing of customers parts using Sigmanest and Autocad, quoting, creating of parts, processing of orders and nesting of materials to be cut on one of the five laser
machines owned by the business.
Laserfab is a small family owned business that offers laser cutting and fabrication services to a wide variety of industries that requires products manufactured from steel. These business
types include engineering, shop fitting and decorative steel work to name a few.
In 2006 I was promoted to the position of Laser Department Manager where I have
remained. My additional duties in this position included the production planning and
subsequent nesting of the materials for the Laser Machines, material stock keeping and ordering.
As the Laser Manager I had twelve members of staff that reported directly to me which
included three draughtsmen, five machine operators, three machine assistants and one
material store man.
While I was employed at Laserfab I worked on the Sigmanest and Autocad software
packages. Sigmanest is an Autocad based software program which was designed to link the CAD based drawing platform to the CNC cutting programs. Sigmanest has the dual function
of allowing the user to draw the customers parts in a Cad based environment. Once the drawing is complete a part is created from this drawing. Total costs and cutting details are
included in this part which enables the part file to be sent to the laser machine to be cut.
2019 - Present
Since leaving Laserfab I have been in the process of emigrating to the United Kingdom. I
have been offering my services as a freelance draughtsman to companies and individuals
who require drawings to be done. This was done using AutoCad and Autodesk Inventor on
my laptop.
