I'm offering
I'm great at getting to the underlying business objectives and being pragmatic - I'd rather do something to step towards the final goal than spend the whole time fighting for the perfect solution.
I'm focussed on qualitative research but also have a solid understanding of statistics and live looking at data.
I'm also highly skilled at using Azure to create interactive prototypes.

job
Senior UX researcher
Racing.
I ran sprint based research to assist with the redevelopment of their entire horse
racing app. This was a project with a deadline and I worked in rapid sprints doing
face to face and remote research to understand the specialist needs of deeply
experienced as well as new users who bet on horse racing.
I also helped to rationalise previous work done into personas and jobs to be done to make sense of the wealth of data and organise them into meaningful information as
well as validate them through research. Contract ended due to Coronavirus.

job
Senior researcher & designer
Beamly / Coty.
I worked as part of a tech startup owned and funded by Coty, one of the world's
largest beauty companies. Our mission was to build a dashboard to enable Amazon
vendors to increase their sales performance.
We had identified an unmet user need in that vendors on Amazon are overwhelmed
by complex fees and chargebacks, hidden under unfamiliar terminology and unrefined reporting systems from Amazon. Working with several vendors we built a
live MVP dashboard which through a combination of Amazon scraping, vendor
account report synthesis, and data modelling, would expose a vendor's profit
margin for the first time.
The MVP was adopted by Coty to help them maximise their profit on Amazon.

job
Senior user researcher
Tesco Plc.
I performed B2C research for the UK's largest online grocery supermarket, looking after user research for home groceries across web and apps.
I led and mentored 2 mid weight researchers and worked in cross functional teams to understand the user journey.
By applying statistics and rigorous tracking to the wealth of qualitative research
conducted, I created an approach to rank issues in terms of severity and impact that
was easy to digest for engineering teams.

2015 - 2016
job
Senior UX Architect
British Medical Journal.
I work in the BMJ collaboration lab, a small team of 3 who facilitated new product
development within the wider, very traditional company.
We created a product development process flow, facilitated workshops and brainstorms with internal and external stakeholders, created personas and designed
prototypes.
I worked on a very wide variety of products; a clinical decision support app for junior
doctors, a print journal redesign, rapid homepage sketching & testing, a hospital
analytics dashboard and a GP drug prescribing assistant.
Having specialist users and a low budget meant we had to develop our own
processes for recruiting users and running research in house; performing guerilla
research was common. I did many qualitative informal interviews and user tests with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and medical students. I recruited participants ad hoc
at GP conferences and booked visits to doctors in hospitals, as well as working with
junior doctors collaboratively for a full week as they attended our meetings and workshops with us.

2011 - 2015
job
User research manager & Interaction designer
Hotels.com, Expedia Inc.
I gained significant depth and breadth of knowledge of the travel and hotel booking
industry, particularly of user needs and decision making processes, having planned and viewed several hundred hours of qual user research.
I managed a research budget of ~£350k, multiple agency relationships, and global
reach across 42 points of sale. Ensured timelines and quality assurance were met as
well as fundamental research objectives, in a fair and unbiased way. Disseminating
results across the team and wider org with presentations, documents, an exhibition
of findings, Jira tickets and working closely with designers, product owners and engineers. I improvised with remote testing and corridor testing whenever necessary as well as managing high end lab testing.
I ran brainstorming and game storming, led the creation of UX principles & user
personas, sharing knowledge with Expedia.com and helping other departments like
marketing & CRM gather user insights.
Global user testing involved frequently travelling to places including Colombia,
Canada, Thailand and Brazil. I set up a program of online customer communities in the UK, Japan, Taiwan, Canada and Brazil to enable us to 'dip in' and ask quick
questions and learn about the longitudinal customer journey from getting a trip idea to going on the trip.
Interaction design occupied 10%-30% of my time depending on research load. This
involved creating high fidelity Axure prototypes to solve very specific product
problems on the hotel search, booking, loyalty and mobile app products. I used
inputs from user research, multi variant testing & analytics to inform designs.
Iteration & innovation were essential.
Design projects included increasing awareness and comprehension of the Welcome
Rewards loyalty programme to new users, search query and loyalty modules for the iOS app, hotel shortlisting, and homepage redesign.

job
UX manager
One to One.
I was an integral part of a small customer experience team specialising in UX
research and design. Starting as a senior UX consultant I worked with clients on
user research and information architecture. I developed excellent interview
moderation skills having conducted hundreds of interviews. I later became the business manager and line managed 11 UX staff, did new business pitches, project
resource allocation, proposal writing, thought leadership and methodology
development.
Projects involved determining needs of clients ranging from Skype, Audi, Financial
Times, Huawei, PayPal, Channel 4 and TUI. I developed and conducted the appropriate test method, ranging from lab user testing, remote testing, card sorting,
focus groups, eye tracking, EEG neuro testing, product testing, surveys ethnography and shop floor walkthroughs. I analysed the results, presented back to the client,
and designed new solutions. I frequently ran projects abroad, from Argentina and
Peru to India and Turkey.
During this role I had several achievements such as learning lots about how to use
our in house Tobii eye tracking and Emotive Epoch EEG scanners, developing a new
user rating scale framework, writing articles and blog posts, developing an online
interrupt method to capture user needs, and developing a more efficient proposal
template.

Module Leader for Java
International college of Business and Technology.
I was responsible for designing learning outcomes and teaching object oriented
programming with Java to international students at first year degree level. I planned
and delivered lectures and lab sessions, designed and marked coursework and exams, and dealt with student problems. This gave me great experience at acting
autonomously, and conveying ideas in an easily digestible way.
