job
Mechanical Design Engineer
MAN Energy Solutions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design of complex machined castings for engine cooling fluid distribution systems encompassing Freshwater, Seawater and Air.
• Aiding the Chief Design Engineer in uprating high speed marine diesel engines, increasing power output by 200KW to 4.2MW.
• Design / creation of detailed production drawings for high accuracy tooling required on Electronic Fuel Injection systems.
• Creation and maintainance of technical files to ensure no issues are created with export licences for military applications.
• Mentor for apprentice and developing graduate engineers (operating at intermediate level).
• Checking and approving component and sub system drawings prior manufacture.
• Driving the DFMEA / FMEA process in order to ensure design deliverables have been met in a safe manner.
• Responsible for liaising with suppliers, including foundries and OEM's.
• Driving Design reviews.
• Ensuring that all mechanical deliverables detailed in subsystem specifications are met.
• Writing specifications and amending internal company standards.
ACHIEVEMENTS
• Significant cost reduction through value engineering of various components to increase competitiveness in emerging markets.
• Creation of extensive hand and FEA calculations for lifting equipment to enable CE marking in accordance with the machinery directive.
• Made significant contributions towards project wins during the tendering process through creation of technical documentation; liaising closely with the sales department. This led to project wins for mission critical power generation equipment with black start capability in excess of £7,000,000 value.

2014 - 2018
job
Design Engineer
BKW Instruments, Eccles, Manchester.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design of subsystems using a modular approach to minimise re-engineering costs as hardware is upgraded over time.
• Checking the work of graduate engineer reportees.
• Responsibility for producing drawings for in house and sub contract manufacture, ensuring compliance with BS8888.
• Introduced and implemented Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD and the Autodesk vault PDM system, having produced a full financial justification for doing so. This increased traceability and the quality of engineering documentation across the organisation.
• Liaised closely with the processing department to ensure that BOM's are correctly processed.
• Significant involvement in the procurement process including checking suppliers work and obtaining costings to aid putting together project budgets.
• Liased closely with the sales department to create product configurators in the forms of generic drawings (fillable forms) with back end coding which prevented erroneous values being entered. This led to a reduction in Non Conformances reflected in company KPI's.
• Technical lead on projects for the Oil and Gas Industry, including design of sub sea instrumentation packages in sea water depths of up to 3000m (BOP monitoring system redesign).
ACHIEVEMENTS
• Design of hardware for the portable APTM solution for aviation fueling leak detection. The system eventually obtained ATEX / IECEx certification (via TUV) and has also achieved HAZLOC approval for use in North America. This hardware system is currently used in airports across the world.
• Sole responsibility for the design of the LTM (Leak Trial Manifold) solution for leak simulation currently utilised within the aviation industry to validate the effectiveness of leak detection software. The system is to be submitted to an aviation industry conference as the standard product for validating the effectiveness of leak simulation software across all airport fuel hydrant systems having been proven in application.
• Developed a Product Configurator for Orifice Plate assemblies combining design by code with creation of models via a parametric CAD system.
