I'm offering
As a graduate in MSc Science Communication, I am excellent at conveying a range of scientific concepts to various audiences in ways that are both engaging and accessible to them. It is important to me to make people realise the excitement of science and how it relates to them. I can offer excellent written communication in a wide range of formats (such as blogging, articles, learning resources and more), specifically catered to the needs of the intended audience. My undergraduate degree was in Medical Genetics at the University of Sheffield Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, meaning my specialist areas are within genetics, biochemistry and other areas of molecular biology. However, I am highly keen and able to branch out into other areas of science, as I did throughout my Master's.
In addition, I am able to provide personal and informative perspectives around areas including neurodiversity, disability issues and mental health. As an autistic, dyspraxic individual who has experienced mental health difficulties, I am highly skilled at using my lived experiences to improve awareness and understanding. I have written blog posts about my experiences, in addition to scientific posts aimed towards adults without a background in science. For my Master's dissertation, I produced two resources around neurodiversity in STEM - I am hoping to carry out further work around this topic.

Saturday Playgroup Volunteer
University of Sheffield Volunteering.
This role involved helping to run activities at a playgroup for children with disabilities and their siblings.
Each session I was matched with a different child who I play with and provide one-to-support to, using the information I am provided with about the child's likes, dislikes and care needs. I have gained
experience in working as part of a team, communication skills, running various activities, adapting to
different situations and care needs, working with disabled individuals, being sensitive to the needs of others, and providing support. I carried out this role about once a fortnight, sometimes more often
depending on availability.

Clubbing Crew Volunteer
University of Sheffield Volunteering.
In this role, I was part of a team that supported adults with learning disabilities to go on clubbing
nights at my university's student union club. Each session, I was allocated a different participant to provide one-on-one support to in order to ensure they have an enjoyable night and provide any help
they may need (e.g. accompanying them to the bar, helping them handling their money or anything that may be specified on their personal information sheet). This role has enhanced my teamwork,
ability to communicate to different people, use the information I am provided with to achieve the best
results, be sensitive to the needs of others and support others. I did this role on a monthly basis during
university term time.

Society University Services Liaison
Mental Health Matters Society.
Mental Health Matters Society are a University society which aims to campaign for awareness and reducing stigma around mental health. This role involved interacting with and sharing information
between the different organisations in the University that have roles in mental health - such as
the University Health Service (UHS), Student Access to Mental Health Support (SAMHS) and the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service (DDSS) - in order to maintain positive relations and appropriate
communication between the society and these organisations. I ensured that the society was kept up to date on any news or events that may be relevant to the society. In order to ensure members
knew where to go for their different needs, I designed a leaflet detailing the different services
available at the University and what they could potentially do to help students. This role enhanced my
communication skills, liaison skills, and ability to discuss sensitive issues appropriately.

Homelessness Outreach Volunteer
unknown.
This organisation aims to provide a 'friendly face' to homeless people around the University of Sheffield
campus and in the city centre. My role involved me walking on planned routes with a group and sitting to chat with any homeless people we saw, offering them gifts such as chocolate bars. How long we
talked to individuals for was largely dependent on whether the individual seemed to want to converse;
this meant we needed to use our discrepancy to determine who seemed engaged and who seemed to want to be left alone. Various individuals I conversed with stated that they considered the experience of simply having a friendly chat to be positive, as many felt ignored and looked down on by the general
public. Where applicable, we could inform and sign-post individuals to relevant organisations that could
potentially help with their specific needs, but we mainly acted as a listening service. Skills I enhanced through this volunteering include awareness of societal issues and services, working with vulnerable
people, communication and listening skills, adapting to different situations, and dealing appropriately and responsibly with sensitive situations.
