Full time contractor
General commercial management, including Client and Subcontractor claims and account management. Reporting to the Operations Direction and Contracts Director on financial performance and reporting. Management of Subcontract and supplier accounts from interim applications and final accounts. Review and defence of claims from the supply chain. Management of a small team of surveyors and buyers to ensure contract compliance and accurate financial reporting. I was also responsible for undertaking the preparation of a significant insurance claim and initial discussions and engagement with the project insurers. Successfully closed out the subcontract final accounts, prepared a significant insurance claim for submission to the loss adjusters. The planned length of the assignment was 4 month, final duration of 12 months.
Short period commission to review claims received from a contractor, provide advice on the validity of each point of claim in terms of the Contract. I also advised on the risk and value of claims received likely outcomes and prepared the counterclaim against the contractor. Client and contractor settled. The planned length of assignment 3 months.

Position: Freelance Senior Quantity Surveyor/ commercial lead
Commercial responsibility for the production of EOT, delay, disruption and prolongation Claims. Management of Quantity Surveyors and ensuring adherence to good practise and company commercial procedures. The planned length of assignment - project duration, the construction phase.
At all times responsible for value management preparation and submission of variations/ compensation events and agreement with clients. Where necessary prepare and submit claims for time and cost in accordance with the relevant terms and conditions of the contract, and assess/ agree such claims from suppliers/ subcontractors.
Other responsibilities included the preparation of valuation and final account documents and agreeing accounts with contractors and Clients. During the life of the project, I am also responsible for accurate monthly reporting through the CVR process.
I was also responsible for several junior surveyors ensuring standards of work and training where required.
West Burton - Mechanical Fabrication project 1.8m
Pipe fabrication project for a £15m power station, with over 12km of pipework, this project has faced several issues with elevated levels of compensation events, disruption, and delay all of which are being valued and assessed in accordance the contract.

Staubach Natural Gas Storage Project
Strategic Natural Gas storage facility, including the fabrication and installation of small and large diameter pipework to facilitate solution mining of storage chambers, pumping station and cross-site distribution of saltwater mining solution. The project consisted of 6km of pipework across a site over 10 square miles, including all power, signal cabling, panelling and instrument works.

Air Products Phase III, Mechanical Fabrication and Installation project, £1.75m
Liquid Natural Gas handling and processing plant, including fabrication and installation of pipework, installation of equipment, lagging of pipework, instrumentation and pneumatic testing, with pre-commissioning upon completion.

Concurrently with project work responsible for the commercial management of the pipe fabrication facility, including cost management, budget control and management of operating overheads. The fabrication shop is capable of outputting over 2000 hrs per week.

Concurrently with other project works, responsible for delivery of small pipe fabrication projects to meet clients needs or emergency requirements on projects ranging from 50k to 250K

From there, I maintained commercial responsibility for all projects from tender review, budgeting and forecasting, to ensuring commercial health of each project. This included contract negotiation, valuations and variations, Subcontract negotiation and payments to Final account agreement with Clients and Subcontractors.
This role included the supervision of up to five project/ site managers, including training and general personnel management.
Projects have ranged in value from £1200.00 to £350,000.00 with approximately 1.1m worth of work in progress from order placement to final account at any one time on a company turnover of £5m.
Conversion of existing City centre retail unit and fit-out for a new Primark store in Stoke-on-Trent. Responsible for procurement of Sub-Contract packages, interim subcontract valuations, contract re-measures and commercial support to the operational team.

Take-off of drawings, preparation of pricing documents and negotiation of some Sub-contract packages.
From price negotiation through to selection and negotiation with sub-contractors, interim accounts, agreement of compensation events and claims, subcontract final account and main contract final account, monthly reporting of multiple contracts to Divisional Quantity Surveyor. Permanent responsibility for 1 junior QS and ad-hoc responsibility for the other 3 QS's on the team.
Llangollen Canal:- Refurbishment of approximately 800m, including draining and over-pumping to enable cleaning and re-lining of the canal, construction of new reinforced concrete canal walls value 800K
Amenity Building: - two canal-side single storey amenity buildings, including all associated roadways and utilities. Each 200k
Chirk tunnel Tow Path:- refurbishment full repair and refurbishment of canal towpath 180k
Swing Bridge:- Northwich, complete reconstruction and repaint of existing swing bridge including abutment replacement. 200K
Canal Bridge refurbishment: - Generally, multiple bridge refurbishment and re-constructions. Varies 10K-120K
Other Projects: - General Canal repairs, including sheet piling embankment re-construction, leak repairs and emergency works.
M1 Junction 27-30:- Acoustic fencing to both sides of the motorway, signage replacement contract value 1.1m
Wakefield Bridge deck replacement: Replacement of and re-waterproofing of the existing bridge deck, including concrete repairs to deck and replacement of abutments. 450K.
General supervision of other QS's in the team overviewing their projects, ensuring consistency and accuracy of financial reporting at month-end, advising on variation recovery and subcontract management.
Sandon dock wastewater treatment works enabling works contract and digester refurbishment. Project values 1.1m and 1.5m, respectively.
Ellesmere Port Sewage Treatment Plant: - Digester refurbishment, including new pipework and electrical equipment. 750K
Ellesmere Port Sewage Treatment Plant:- Foul air extraction works, construction and all associated M&E to incorporate foul air capture and treatment including other on-site modifications, including new storage tanks onsite diversions. 2m
Local Authority contracts including school extension and refurbishments and pre-paint repairs valued to 250k with between 10 - 15 projects on site at any time (split with 1 other surveyor) and a design and build office scheme.
