My experience
2018 - 2019
internship
SVS intern
Cisco.
This role was my sandwich placement. Here I worked as part of a small team building small small network
environments where customers could have their network solution tested and verified by Cisco Engineers.
During my time here I supported daily datacenter maintenance and was primary contact for several projects,
some of these included:
● Scripting for proof of concept network management tools.
● Testing customer network designs and reporting on functionality and network performance.
● Racking, stacking, cabling and configuring test environments.
● Primary contact for the migration of the data centers management network to ACI.
This role enabled me to learn at an accelerated rate and pass exams CCNP Route and CCNP Switch which have
now migrated to a CCS-Enterprise core certificate. During my time here I also supported the development of apprentices, helping with CCNA lab sessions where I would assist with their progress on the CCNA certification.

This was a temporary role where I was taken on to support a small business with attaining PCI DSS compliance,
allowing the use of card machines in a retail store. Due to the size of the business I worked very closely with the current web developer to document and secure the network within compliance guidelines. This meant
configuring clients, servers and networking equipment.

design.
Network Management - This module covers aspects of network management such as QoS
configuration, management network design, SNMP and working with Syslog servers.
Enterprise Applications - This module covers virtualisation, cloud computing and containers. For
Second semester I am deploying an MDM solution as part of a small team
Network Security - This module looks at network security and follows the old CCNA security
material. This is assessed with an exam akin to the CCNA security, but also
requires the configuration of security on a small network (eg Dynamic
routing authentication and IPSec.
Dissertation - My dissertation is an investigation into the deployment of VXLAN as an
overlay in a small network and how this can impact performance. I hope
this will further my understanding of the technology and how identify how
VTEP processing and VXLAN headers impact latency and data transfers.
