2000 - 2007
job
Lecturer, Faculty of Business & Computing
Kingston College for Further.
Higher & Adult Education
In September 2000, I enrolled again for the OCR/RSA Teacher/Trainer Diploma in IT, while at the same time continuing to teach IT part-time on contract. Over the next few years, I taught IT
successfully to many learners who achieved one or more of the following qualifications:
• BCS Equalskills and European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
• LCCI Practical Computing Database Level 1-3
• OCR/RSA Internet Technologies
• C&G 7261/212 Computers & Computing
• C&G 7261/400 & 420 Word Processing Level 1 & 2
• C&G 7261/425 Web Page Design Level 2
• DiDA - Diploma for Digital Applications
• Vision2learn First Steps and Next Steps - NCFE Using IT Level 1 & 2
• Vision2learn Web Entrepreneur & Wizard on the Web - NCFE Level 2 and 3
This involved preparing lesson plans, handouts and exercises, marking of exams and recording results,
using MS Excel or Access. I was in awe when first introduced to Blackboard e-learning technology. I helped to pioneer early projects on Blackboard and my interest in online learning later developed into a Project
Manager role for Learndirect and Vision2learn online IT courses.
Contracts included:
• Office Technology Skills was a full-time 11 week course (run 3 terms per year) offering adults
(English and EFL learners) returning to work, the opportunity to gain skills in MS OFFICE. Learners joining
the course in September could stay for 2 or 3 terms and gain LCCI Practical Computing qualifications up to Level 3. I taught file management, MS ACCESS database & OCR/RSA Internet Technologies to this group.
• In 2002, KC became a Test Centre for the European Computer Driving Licence. I started with
three groups of approx. 15 learners that year: two groups of adults, one in the afternoon and one in the evening; and one group of 15-16yr olds on day-release from school. Each group attended for 3 hours pw over the academic year. I created an e-course site for the ECDL course using Kingston College's
Blackboard system, which enabled learners to access info and course materials online.
• I also ran Staff Development workshops, and indeed, ECDL was soon introduced as part of the KC staff development programme, which was included in my remit. Delivery of ECDL at Kingston College
also enabled me to roll out ECDL 'privately' in the charity sector for Kingston Voluntary Action
(Superhighways) and for The Mount Primary School PTA.
Self Employed Contracts included:
• Funding from the European Social Fund to train volunteers and charity workers in IT skills created
the Superhighways Partnership. Attendees included a number of exceptional people from my local
community, including nurses, accountants and lawyers!! One day training sessions included: introductory or
advanced Word, Excel or Access, half days included Mail Merge, PowerPoint and Publisher. It was
interesting and challenging to train people who needed skills for the workplace.
• In response to a flyer from my daughter's primary school, requesting ideas for IT classes for parents,
I applied for funding to teach ECDL to parents (one morning pw during term-time). The application was
successful and The Mount was established as a satellite test centre for KC. The school received much
needed support to improve their IT room/facilities. As Project Manager, it was very rewarding to see
confidence grow and to help over 20 mums achieve their very first qualification.
