Florida I introduced Pro Poly.
Implementation of new products and setting up of a manufacturing facility for John Dennis Coachbuilders, UK in a joint venture with Pro Poly of America, manufacturing Plastic Fire Engine Bodies. I spent three months in the USA studying manufacturing methods to bring the processes and technology back to the UK. http://www.polybilt.com. Whilst in Florida I introduced Pro Poly to Lean Manufacturing and work on cost down project, highlighting well over a million dollars' worth of saving. Many have already been implemented. It is the intention to work on a flow line system, working to lean principles and reducing cost and waste where possible.
Fixture & Body design. Solidworks and AutoCad.
Also sourcing bodies in the UK from UK based fabricators (Suppliers assessments), looking at cost reduction, Lean Manufacturing and production timescales. Such as material selection, design for manufacture, design for assembly, quality, verifying pre production and production tooling, trouble shooting on assembly and moulding (this entailed visiting suppliers and phone assembly sites in the UK, Europe and the Far East).
Additional to the above I attended process and design FMEA at suppliers at the concept of new projects and worked with procurement disscussing tooling issues with tooling engineer and new suppliers for plastic moudings. The work with HVM was to verify production tooling using internal QA systems such as ISIR's, CAP studies and AV reports to give technical approval on site or at suppliers (vis email and laptop computers).

job
Senior Research & Development Manager
Britax Childcare Limited.
(made redundant).
Reporting to the Technical Director, I was responsible for the day to day running of the Research & Development Department. This department was responsible for all engineering functions i.e. drawings (four CAD stations), drawing office and manufacturing procedures, change notes, R&D, model making, product design, soft goods, product testing (we use in house and external testing facilities) and general engineering problems including manufacturing.
The department works closely with Marketing, Servicing, Purchasing, Material Control, Manufacturing (nursery goods, wheeled goods and soft goods) and Quality Control.
R&D was responsible for the tooling required by Britax, such as injection mould tools and plastic related tooling, press tools, tube manipulating tools and manufacturing fixtures. I visited toolmakers to discuss new tooling or modifications if necessary, along with attending tool trials, especially if looking at new materials.
Attended various meetings on a weekly basis, such as new product introduction, cost down, new products (goal statements) and manufacturing.
R&D consisted of a tight knit group of multi skilled engineers and designers. All the staff were capable of design and hands on problems solving, trouble shooting, producing prototypes for marketing, presentations, testing, and liaison with suppliers. Microsoft Project, Lotus 123, WordPerfect and Xtreegold. As all drawing and design work is done on networked CAD stations using AutoCAD release 12.

Senior Design Engineer (Product Develeopment) contract. Edwards High Vacuum Int
unknown.
At Edwards I worked for a satellite depart responsible to the manufacturing Director. This department, the Manufacturing Technology Department is accessed by all Edwards's sites worldwide and works closely with the main technical department at Shoreham (West Sussex). The main function of this department is to offer manufacturing and technical services outside of those already in existence. There are no boundaries to the input and could range from cost savings to the implementation of new packaging. Some of the functions I carried out were as follows:
1. Investigation, introduction and co-ordination of DO Design, Manufacturing and Quality Control Procedures for plastics, which is a relatively new area for Edwards.
2. Rationalisation of manufacturing methods with the object of cost reductions and the compilation of Capital Expenditure Proposals.
3. Applications of plastics technology to concept design of new ranges of pumps using injection moulding, thermosets, RIM, vacuum forming and foam moulding.
4. The implementation or direct metal to plastic replacement for cost reduction without degradation of product performance.
5. Product testing.
6. Material selection, prototype design, detail design for numbers 3 & 4 above. In general components for Edwards require a material that is stiff, giving a high strength up to 120 continual working temperature, good chemical resistance, low creep and good dimensional accuracy (as high as + or -0.025 as moulded in some instances).
7. Setting up of plastics material library and toolmaker/moulders data base.
8. Some work was done on CAD (Autocad) and on the board. If necessary outside designers were used, such as tool designers.
