Creative Artworker
Dinosaur.
Dinosaur is a progressive, award-winning integrated communications agency. Adapting artwork, retouching images, colour control, artworking creative into print ready files.
I have had the opportunity to gain an understanding by using After Effects for some animation.
There has been a Digital Social Element, that was new to my working knowledge, setting up email for eCRM, Facebook headers, web banners to name a few examples.
I work on a number of in-house accounts including COOP Food and COOP Bank and Atkins, TfGM, The Corn Exchange, but predominantly I am the champion of Well Pharmacy (previously COOP Pharmacy) and The Gym Group.
With Well there has been National Press Ad Campaign and more recently there is a full kit of POS for the various branches coupled with a 24pp POS guide, all which I handle.
Recently there was a digital campaign online and digital outdoor for TfGM (Transport for Greater Manchester), which comprised of all kinds of static and GIF animations.
I actually instigated the ability to populate artwork using spreadsheets that were filled in by The Gym
branches with their specific timetable information data merged direct into InDesign, bringing in class names and icons, class times, instructor names and whether the class was paid with a paid icon. These
happen to be subject to quite a few updates and are available to download from their website.
The Gym has had a recent redesign to their campaigns with varied media that requires many different specs that are checked against the booking and the information required. All of which I have set as
templates ready for options of imagery / messaging and prices and benefits on every media being printed, digital or press.

Studio / Repro Manager
Chapel Press.
Chapel Press is a medium sized litho-printers based in Bredbury Stockport, specialising in the production of stationary, posters, brochures and folders to name a few. Work came in either on disk or over the wire, it was then printed over the Creo-Scitex Brisque and then the ripped job was imposed and high quality proofed.
Once work approved it was then pumped out to the Creo Lotem 400 CTP (Computer-To-Plate).
Plates were checked before printed on press. Sometimes some artwork is required, from minor type alterations, medium artwork amends to full artwork creation.
At Chapel I instigated the installation of up-to-date software, an Epson proofer with BEST RIP Software, and the installation of a 2mb Broadband, the highest available at the time. The ADSL replaced an ISDN line, and the Epson with BEST RIP Software replaced a DuPont Digital Cromalin. These changes made sure we could accept work from all clients in the latest of software, and installing broadband got the work to the studio quicker. The Epson was 3x quicker, 5x better quality and at least ten times cheaper to run.
As Studio Manager I made sure the presses were kept running, priority of the jobs and deadlines promised are an essential part of my position. Making good communication with all staff and colleagues was most necessary, this helps everything run as smoothly as humanly possible. As it is the final part of a printed job, this is when it's the absolute last chance to change artwork, which can usually result in an even tighter deadline. Luckily I would say I work best with the pressure turned on, my exuberance and knowledge increased production without sabotaging quality. In fact I would say the quality increased since my start, the more automated you can set work up, then the less mistakes and repetitions you encounter.

Digital Retouch Operator
The Refinery Group.
Refinery is one of the largest digital photographic studios in the North West and has a large client listing of design, MarComms and catalogue work. Controlling and collating raw RGB images and retouching them at either the RGB or CMYK stage.
When I joined Montage, as it was known then I started as a Middle-weight Digital Operator, but in just over a year I was offered the promotional position of Senior Digital Operator. The digital department is the bottleneck of the company, the work and my role have changed considerably in that time.
Processing RGB to a CMYK conversion, placing within the artwork if necessary, and proofing through a Realist Iris for approval. Jobs which I have handled are; Triton Showers, Dulux, Vidal Sassoon, Pedigree, Antler and GUS. Working with the latest in software running applications through OSX, networked on to an OSX Server with 10 Raid 100gb drives. Backing up the work on an Overland 10 tape jukebox DLT drive with regular Cumulus doubled with extra CD backups on certain jobs.

Colour Retouch Repro Operator
Cyclone Imaging.
At Cyclone I was controlling the Repro Department, keeping the work flow going and maintaining given deadlines by keeping communication with the client.
Organising the collection and delivery of a job was all part of the deadline and the time was always calculated at the booking in-stage when jobs had to be sorted to proof, or film, to scan or pagination.
All shots were scanned in on a Scitex 342L scanner. After that all shots were cleaned up and colour matched to the transparency or a hard copy supplied. Images were then either sent back to the client or placed in the Quark job after any was done if required.
The assembled quark doc was then, if required imposed to a spec from the printer and printed to the Scitex Brisque where low res files were APRed and substituted for high res images. The job was then ripped to spec , FAFed (trapped) before being proofed out onto a B2 Iris 4Print, and then after approval plot the job onto film through the Dolev4.
After the job was finished all the elements were burnt onto archive CD and collated and saved in Canto Cumulus.

Apprentice Mac Operator
Flying Pig Studios.
Specialising in typography, design and working within deadlines governed by the newspaper and magazine industry; this is where I learnt my trade of perfection.
I was working on tight deadlines for classified adapts; supplying bromide and the little known at the time ADS/ISDN for media insertion, along with conventional design and print.
I started here as an apprentice on day release at College gaining a Distinction BTEC Level III. After a short amount of time I was put on the payroll where the MD was keen to show me the commitment to me. From this I attended a one-on-one Adobe Photoshop course. In this course I impressed the Tutor so much that I was immediately pushed through the Advanced Level.
Within 6 months of being at FP I was offered a position in Cyclone Imaging, a sister company of Flying Pig Studios as it became apparent where my skills stood tall.
