National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, I was employed by P&O on fast containerships. Initially steam
turbine powered but in later years with marine diesels (50,880 bhp / 38 MWt units). Apart from routine dry
dock work I was involved with the project team based at Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI)
Hiroshima, Japan for six months in 1981 during the conversion of the fleet from steam to diesel propulsion.
From June 1985 the role of safety representative was incorporated into my duties as Second Officer Engineer.
