Platform Engineer
ITV.
Platform engineer services at ITV across their Content Delivery, Fulfilment Planning and Asset Management projects. Essentially a platform that receives, transcodes, stores and delivers ITV video content to internal and 3rd parties.
Initial project deliverable was to modernise the aging on-premises platform and migrate all services to Amazon Web Services using the latest tooling and practices.
The cloud migration project was delivered successfully in a scalable, highly available, self healing and reproducible (automated) way, a significant improvement to their previous system. Infrastructure was mainly delivered using Terraform and puppet ensuring reproducibility and quick scalability.
Proud contributor to ITV puppet and terraform modules, always looking to simplify and improve ways of working.
Highlights at ITV
- Use Terraform to create everything in AWS ranging from VPC's, RDS, EC2 right down to S3 policies. If it can terraform, terraform it.
- Use Jenkins and puppet in addition to TF to scale environments, deploy microservices and infra systems on packer baked AMIs
- Blue green deploy pipelines, scaling new releases in and out (using Jenkins and ASGs)
- Built numerous deployment pipelines that are essential to dev teams
- Fully rebuild production environments at least once a month. Switch off dev/test environments out of hours to reduce cost while testing platform recovery and automation.
- Fully automated Jenkins instances using puppet. Job and pipeline management automated using JenkinsJobBuilder and JobDSL.
- Consul for service discovery, kv store, DNS.
- Docker-compose used in microservice builds and testing
- Network troubleshooting, tcpdump, vlans, nic bonding, routing etc
- Telegraf for metrics stored in InfluxDB and Grafana for dashboards.
- Kong for api's used for securing critical systems exposed to external clients.
- Packer for building shared base AMIs
- Logstash for system and application logs + Elasticsearch, Kibana
- Sensu/Uchiwa alerting and Jenkins build info hooked into Slack. Pagerduty for critical systems.

2014 - 2015
job
Senior Linux & Infrastructure Engineer
AIMIA Inc.
Initial project at AIMIA was to roll out their self-serve application stack to 3 new client sites hosted around the world in various DCs.
Main deliverables ranged from setting up infrastructure, VMs (VMware), OS (RHEL6), middleware (Jboss), some proprietary software and provide documentation.
Technical lead on one of the projects which was rolled out to HP's Helion managed cloud, closely working with HP and their engineers to deliver the environment.
Most notably introduced automation in existing manual application builds using Ansible and custom built RPMs significantly reducing the roll out time. "What took days before now took minutes"
Also improved Nagios systems used for monitoring prod environments which alert 24/7 on-call staff, drastically reducing the number of false alerts ensuring a more stable monitoring system.
In April took on a new project working closely with agile development teams to deliver test and production environments. Main responsibilities were configuring load balancers (F5 LTM), Red Hat VMs, Apache and application (Jboss/Tomcat/Bamboo) servers. This was primarily hosted on VMware with parts of the implementation done on Amazon Web Services.
* Client recommendations available on request

DIRECTOR
Kuoni Group.
Lead Engineer - Infrastructure Services
Responsibilities and experience:
● Team Lead for infrastructure and middleware services, annual reviews, holidays, overtime
● Linux administration on 400+ server environment (RHEL/CentOS)
● Configuration management - implemented and configured puppet master & dashboard across CS environment. Deployed puppet to over 400 Linux servers.
● Improvement of various systems including ESXi, kickstart installations, monitoring, security
● Planned and executed all Linux systems patching, upgrades across all environments
● Ensured PCI compliance of linux systems where required
● Capacity planning for IT infrastructure, relationships with suppliers and vendors
● Ensuring stable environments during high loads on critical business systems
● Implemented and maintained a new datacenter for the commercial environment in Zurich
● Design, procurement, technical documentation and diagrams of new environments
● MySQL administration. Backups & recovery, multi-master replication
● Configured monitoring and alerting of all environments, primarily using Nagios/Cacti
● Backups and disaster recovery of all systems
● Trained and mentored junior members across the team
I joined GTA (later Kuoni) on a rolling 3 month contract (umbrella) to support the day to day operations in the Commercial Systems (CS) team. After 6 months I accepted a permanent position and took on more responsibilities, bringing a number of improvements to the IT environment.
Most notably I implemented puppet managing over 400 Linux servers which played a fundamental role in day to day operations.
I migrated many non-production services away from our London office DC to our Zurich DC.
At the end of 2012 I was promoted to team lead of infrastructure services. I managed a team of 4 engineers primarily looking after infrastructure services and middleware.
I optimised and simplified my environments as much as possible using automation. This resulted in the ability to duplicate, recreate and deploy environments in a matter of minutes.
Before my departure, Kuoni was undertaking a project to replace its existing commercial application stack with Oracles e-commerce suite. It was my responsibility to deliver infrastructure and middleware for the project as well as being involved in design and implementation.
I was also involved in the early stages of migrating some of our smaller production environments to Amazon Web Services before my departure.
