Production Project Manager
Almac Clinical Services.
Working as a Production Project Manager my main responsibilities revolve around working with global companies ensuring their production requirements are relayed to the Almac Clinical Services production team ensuring all clinical material is packaged to meet strict GMP requirements whilst also meeting project deadlines.
In order to successfully complete project packaging campaigns I use a combination of Waterfall and Prince2 Project Management techniques.
The highly regulated nature of the Pharma industry requires certain pre-requisites are in place before a project can move to the next stage resulting in these milestones being managed through waterfall techniques. However some of the Prince2 Themes, Processes and Principles must also be applied in order to complete project packaging campaigns and deal with changing customer requirements; For example Product Quality must be the centre of all production campaigns and risks that may be encountered in production runs must be identified and monitored. Changes to an aspect of production must be carefully controlled and looped back into the Quality theme to ensure product quality is not affected by any changes.
I manage project plans for production operations occurring across my customer base, consisting of around 20 global customers-each with multiple projects, and monitor the critical path of each plan to ensure deadlines are met. I am responsible for generating and critically evaluating a wide range of production documents which must stand up to analysis from both internal and external quality departments.
I am a point of escalation should production issues arise and it is my responsibility to seek ways to remedy issues and communicate problems and solutions plans to stakeholders accordingly. Working with stakeholders I am also responsible for monitoring production billing activities to ensure that activities are carried out within the allocated budget.

Project Manager
Queens University Belfast/DMAC Engineering.
Working as a project manager my role was to control multiple waste treatment system installation projects using Prince2 Project Management techniques with a blend of Agile Project Management where applicable.
It was my responsibility to meet customers and potential customers to discuss their waste water issues, characterise those waste waters, conduct lab analysis to determine the usage of specific chemicals for the treatment process, establish and maintain links with external laboratories and monitoring bodies for the independent analysis of customer samples and prepare detailed reports for the transfer of all results allowing consents of discharge to be obtained.
In order to complete each project Prince2 Principles were adhered to as far as possible. It was my duty to evaluate each potential project and determine its viability. Once a project was deemed viable I met with DMAC Engineering directors and senior management team to set out a project pathway. I broke each project into a number of stages and used these stages to determine the continued viability of a project. Upon completion of projects, both successful and unsuccessful I was responsible for meeting with the project team and completing a lessons learned log in order to learn from each project.
The very nature of the projects meant that on most occasions concepts of Agile Project Management had to also be followed; For example welcoming changing requirements was an important part of my role-as customer requirements changed I had to take these on board and adjust the treatment techniques where applicable. Using the iteration aspect of Agile Project Management was also important to each project as targets/products were often delivered in sections throughout a projects life cycle.
My role enabled DMAC Environmental enter the waste water treatment market with £100,000 sales made over the project course and £210,000 worth of further sales secured in the pipeline at my time of leaving. The project was graded as "outstanding" by Innovate UK in September 2016.

Research Fellow/Project Manager
Queens University Belfast.
Bacteriophage Assisted Metagenomics (BAM) for biocatalyst discovery-This project revolved around the transfer of DNA between microorganisms, more specifically bacteria and bacteriophage, and the acquisition of genes "foreign" to a particular microorganism. These microorganisms were extracted from waste water treatment plants and were specifically probed for catalytic genes within microbial metagenomic DNA with the aim of using molecular techniques to isolate full and functioning target genes.
The main techniques used included DNA extraction and purification, PCR, Inverse PCR, cloning, sequencing, Illumina sample Preparation isolation of full and partial genes and expression of target genes. Over the course of the project an alcohol dehydrogenase was isolated from metagenomic DNA and expressed.
Key duties involved resource management including budgeting equipment and consumables throughout the project, project plan development and experimental design/execution as well as liaising with InvestNI to give them a breakdown of project benefits from an economic point of view at regular intervals. I was also involved in training PhD, MSc and undergraduate students based in the laboratory.

Postdoctoral Researcher
Dublin City University.
Working within a multidisciplinary research team in the school of Chemical Sciences I was involved in the design of experiments used to try and enhance the current understanding of the role of microorganisms in the sequestration of atmospheric CO2.
Key duties included planning and prioritising experiments over two sites to generate successful data sets, liaising with the Principal Investigator to design and implement experiments, managing project budget, producing reports for project stakeholders, liaising with Teagasc to secure sites for analysis, preparing detailed papers for publication in relevant scientific journals, preparing samples for NMR analysis; I also carried out molecular biological analysis following completion of experiments including qPCR assays, DGGE, Stable isotope probing as well as the preparation and analysis of samples for Pyrosequencing.
As a post-doctoral researcher I was also involved in the supervision of PhD and honours students as well as ensuring health and safety guidelines were met at all times within the laboratory. Successful outcomes of working within this multi-disciplinary team have centred on the generation of publications and presentation of papers at a number of conferences.
