I'm offering
I have worked in data and information architecture for over 20 years, with a focus on the Financial Sector and relational models. I am passionate about the transformative effect that the appropriate use of technology and data can have on businesses.
I am very much a hands-on architect with a track record of delivering data solutions from conception to delivery and into continued support. Driving simplicity and repeatable patterns and processes is central to my approach, along with decisive and effective communication with stakeholders and team members alike.
I am a highly skilled data modeller, and believe that NoSQL doesn't mean non-relational or schema-less. Consistent evolving and flexible models and schemas, with high quality data, supported and reinforced by metadata are, in my opinion and experience, key to successful integration, migration, business intelligence and machine learning projects.

Lead Data Architect
Iress UK.
I lead a team of data architects and data analysts, who I am proud to have been able to mentor and
see grow both in their technical and soft skills. I share responsibility for the global data strategy, and
have a primary focus on application schema and data in Europe, being preeminent in defining and enforcing database standards and patterns.
Systems Integration Data Mapping Model (Close Brothers)
I delivered a drill-through model encapsulating the integration of the numerous systems involved in delivering the CBAM solution. The model was delivered using Enterprise Architect, an in-house
developed modelling technology, coded imports of APIs, XSD and XML schemas, as well as reverse-engineered physical data schemas and integration metadata detailing the node to node flow of data. The underlying metadata, within the model, enabled the identification of data consistency
and type errors, with the additional sequence diagrams providing business context alongside the
data flow and visual representation of the underlying interfaces.
Adviser Office Client Portal
Provided technical leadership in delivering hosted client portal application on SQL Server using
Always Encrypted technology to secure sensitive and PII data in line with GDPR regulations.
Delivered conceptual, logical and physical models along with the majority of database code in firstly
SCRUM, then KanBan agile approaches. Implemented SSIS suite of packages, using BIML, to migrate
data from alternate client portal databases with 100% accuracy, and well within performance
criteria.
Data Migration of Adviser Office to Xplan
SSIS used, by means of BIML, to enable accurate and efficient import of data from Access database to SQL Server staging databases, to replace previous unreliable SSMA implementation.
Mortgage Sourcing and Originations Version 2
Provided design for subscriber-based MI solution for the latest version of the MSO software,
enabling an event-driven model for collation of data changes from the various application services to a central MI repository.
GDPR Programme
Identification of all data assets across the application space, along with supporting other
departments across the business, to identify data assets that contained PII. Collation of sources and uses of data to add to Information Security Asset Register. Recommendations made to have
self-describing schemas within the software, so that the metadata about PII, sensitivity, required
security including encryption and numerous other key items could be accessed by the applications, and also for other purposes, such as automatic updating of the Asset Register.
Document Storage Solution
Designed and implemented a partitioned document store on SQL Server, using physically separate
document data into different databases and physical file aligned tables under updateable views in order to allow improvement performance of document retrieval, backup and restore. Additionally
provided ease of archive and removal of old data in line with data retention policies.
Data Consistency \ Compliance Engine
Designed and implemented a data store, enabling the creation of business and data consistency
rules along with recipients of failures of those rules. The recipients could be static, or derived from lookups back to the source database. The failures being logged, along with supporting statistical
metadata on start and finish times, totals of potential entities affected, and the actual numbers of failures to support both performance and trend analysis.
Various client-facing engagements
Parachuted in to provide technical leadership and supporting solutions for a number of challenging
situations where issues had been escalated to board level. All issues documented, resolutions found,
reparative changes made to processes and delivery implemented to fix problems within very short
timescales.

PRIME (Intrinsic\Quilter IFA Network Back Office)
I was the assigned data design authority responsible for the development, support and promotion of the corporate enterprise data model including supporting materials, design patterns and assets, which included SQL Server Database standards and guidelines and code reviews for on and off-shore
staff.
● The core enterprise model defining the financial services business domain that was
appropriate to all our existing products, which has been used in several subsequent products
providing both savings in time and money, through consistency, familiarity and ease of extensibility. Reviewed and commented on by Dr Michael Blaha, a founder member of UML:
'This is a very good model, both in terms of quality of modeling content as well as clean
naming, layout, consistent architecture policies, etc. Candidly, the model is excellent and as
good as any I've ever seen.'
● Delivery of data model extensions, conforming to enterprise model requirements, within the confines of SCRUM development approach.
Mortgage Sourcing and Originations MI (Nationwide)
I acted as the data design authority, and sole developer of MSO MIS solution, modelling and implementing a published MI data model to consolidate the various service databases, and XML
Forms Admin data into a coherent data structure, providing a 'single version of the truth'. Solution
utilised a T-SQL processing engine that used extensive meta data to enable mapping and transformation of data from source, through staging to published schema.
● Provided on-site problem resolution, and tuning advice.
● Provided documentation and presentations of the technical approach to Nationwide, and their third party vendors, of the MI solution and it's integration with downstream MI\BI
processing.
● Delivered solution within timescales, and within performance criteria, through an interactive
agile approach.

B&L are one of the world's largest suppliers of eye health products, including contact lenses, lens
care products, medicines and implants for eye diseases. I was responsible for delivering scheduled
and ad-hoc reporting against AS\400 using Query 400 (SQL), RPG II and RPG 400.
● Cleared a three year backlog of reporting requests within six months, allowing main
developer to progress with scheduled development that had also been stalled for a similar
period.
● Completely turned around perception from internal clients of the IT department, from 'can't
do' to 'can do' in a year.
