Working primarily within Nationwide Digital as well as some touchpoints across the wider organisation(Security, Mortgages, etc.)
Digital Accelerator Platform: I am working closely with the Infrastructure team in the Digital part of the organisation. The
first thing I observed when joining was the challenges with Product focus, prioritisation, visibility, planning and the health/wellbeing of the team. I worked closely with the leadership team and the delivery teams to create a new structure
and ways of working to meet the challenges they were facing. We took a lean approach to optimise the flow of demand to realisation which resulted in increased predictability, clear Product vision and strategy. finally effective planning for
continuous delivery. From a technical perspective, we have also been able to create an infrastructure based on immutable
environments that focus on horizontal scaling to meet the scalability demands of our customers.
Culture: Working with leadership and teams to cultivate and build a culture based on safety, equal voice, individual
growth, organisational growth, and empowerment. With the organisation being multi-partner it's been important to build an environment where we see and experience a single culture across the whole team. Which we have achieved by helping
the team stop and reflect on their journey and build a clear picture of the environment and culture they believed would
give them success moving forward. We then continuously reflected on this and adapted it where required.
Agility: Working with teams to help them build greater levels of Agility into how they operate. Multiple teams struggled
with being able to meet the ever-changing demands of their customers in a responsive way. I work closely with them and spend a period in observation to deeply understand their unique system. From this, I then run various workshops/sessions to help them step outside their context and view it objectively. Helping them identify the areas of their system that
constrain them and providing them with the space to design ways to experiment with new improvements to their system.
Continuously reflecting on the journey and adapting where required.
Whole Organisation Collaboration & Sharing: Helping the organisation build multiple ways of bringing people together to share, learn and grow. Nationwide is a big building society and there is so much great stuff happening across it. It's
difficult to enable people to come together in the right way. I work closely with leadership to create and cultivate various
mechanisms of allowing people to share and come together as a community including; Blogs, Dojo's, Podcasts,
Hackathons, Hosted Conversations, etc.
Operating Structure: Working across the whole team and leadership to build new ways of operating to face the challenges of their system. The teams faced challenges around visibility, decision making, prioritisation, support, etc. I work
closely with them to create a deeper understanding of these problems and to build a hypothesis of how we may solve
them. This has resulted in the creation of ever-evolving structures that meet the current demands of the system, allowing the teams to easily face into any challenge ahead of them.
Financial Agility: Working with leadership to create greater levels of agility within their funding structure. The existing
structure for funding was to typically have a 'Bucket' of funding applied to each specific area based on a time period. This
doesn't provide the level of agility around funding what leadership would like to have. We are now moving towards a model
where funding is allocated on shorter time periods based on certain outcomes being achieved. With the vision being to have the teams funded 'in the moment' and the spend being only what is required to achieve certain measures of success.
The most important parts of my time so far at Nationwide are:
Cultivating sustainable growth for teams, allowing me to step away and support other areas of the organisation
Building a greater level of interconnection across the whole organisation
Helping people to have a greater understanding of their unique system and evolving it to enable growth
