2014 - 2014
job
Managing Partner, Solutions and New Markets, GE Healthcare Partners
GE Healthcare.
2011 - 2014
job
Managing Partner and GM Northern Europe
GE Healthcare Partners.
GE Healthcare Partners is the independent consulting business of GE Healthcare. When I took control of this business, it was a business concentrating Lean 6 Sigma and Leadership services to the NHS - and losing relevance and value with a commoditised offering. I re-established this business as a credible alternative to Big 4 consulting, delivering on NHS organisational objectives through partnering expertise with an outcome and patient quality focus, achieved by developing quality of engagements, client relationships and significant organisational structure and talent changes. Through 2013/14 I introduced, and was central to, the acquisition and integration of Finnamore into GE, creating one of the largest and most successful health consultancies in the UK. Major landmarks include appointment to the NHS FT support framework - which led to leadership of several major pieces of work including a year long Lean Transformation Programme at St Georges NHS Trust, and UK regional DGHs.
I built a professional services firm ethos in the corporate operating mechanisms of General Electric. Both organisationally and culturally challenging, the outcome was a rapid increase in the profile of the firm and an ability to bid for high quality, transformational consulting engagements, as well as an enhanced perception of GE. Post-acquisition I moved to shaping the Partners' role in GE Healthcare repositioning from products to providing outcomes, building on GE's enviable reputation of technical and leadership excellence in making health better, as well as our geographic footprint. I led regional and global initiatives to increase the effectiveness of connections between advisory and with GE's imaging, technology and services product organisations, starting from the customer needs and regionally relevant services - focussing on quality, access and economics. Breakthrough accounts with the purpose of geographic expansion include Karolinska Institute and Hospital, Stockholm (developed a 'solution' for new models of cancer care between academia, medical and commercial partners) and VGR (also Sweden, on adopting digital pathology).
As a thought leader, I routinely presented at conferences on healthcare transformation, including being on the same platform as UK Health Secretary of State, and talking at The Kings Fund on innovation and transformation. My thought leadership pieces (in print and videos) have appeared in the Health Service Journal, Guardian Health Network and The Kings Fund website; a selection of which are linked below

2007 - 2011
job
Director, Programme Leadership Practice, Consulting
Deloitte, Stonecutter Court.
As a Director in Deloitte's Strategy and Operations Healthcare group, my focus was on developing clients, capability and the business by talking Deloitte capacity from the whole firm to the NHS. I had accountability for the P&L of the Public Sector Programme Leadership practice. Achievements included leading the growth of work transforming how clinical education was delivered in London, leading a multi-year portfolio of work, proving myself as a healthcare subject matter expert to the NHS as well as a client and practice leader. Some examples of my client work are given below.
• Reforming healthcare education and workforce
The NHS spends over £1bn on healthcare workforce training and development just in London. NHS London led the country in the way the next generation of medical and non-medical workforce is developed to meet changing healthcare needs. The move from an unplanned, unmanaged system, to one tightly performance managed to match the outputs of the training system to the service demands is significant. Over nearly two years, Andy has worked as Deloitte's lead, overseeing a 20 project portfolio ranging from development of QA and contracting systems, capability and capacity development with the client and their provider base, to complex strategic relationship management process development and economic analysis of programme design and cost reduction scenarios. This work formed a £5m revenue stream over 18 months for Deloitte.
• Evaluating the Productive Ward
NHS London injected £10m into NHS Trusts in the capital to seed the adoption of the NHS's own lean based performance toolset, The Productive Ward: Releasing Time to Care. I secured the NHS London commission to evaluate the Productive Ward. Andy led a team of programme review, healthcare and lean specialists to assess the benefits attributable to this investment across 43 NHS providers in the capital. The resulting evaluation report is now quoted nationally for identifying the main driving factors behind successful programme implementations of this toolset and approach, as well as attributing some £10m of productivity savings within the first year.
