Assistant Management Accountant
QinetiQ Plc.
QinetiQ Plc is a FTSE 250 company of scientists and engineers committed to listening, understanding and responding to customers' needs through sheer depth of experience and unique science and engineering expertise to clients with powerful solutions to their most pressing challenges. Having privatised and subsequently floated in early 2006, the business was in its relative infancy in establishing itself as a commercial organisation, capable of delivering on shareholder expectations. With a market capitalisation of £1.7bn and reoccurring revenues of c.£700m deriving from global operations covering EMEA and North America, the business possessed the scale and complexity to offer a substantial opportunity for growth and development.
Responsibilities:
* Management of a controllable cost base of circa £20m PA
* Ownership of all aspects of management accounting
* Business partnering with departmental heads to drive operational efficiencies
* Ownership of Capital investment programme, targeted with maintaining ROCE objectives
* Production of monthly management packs, including detailed commentary of variances
* Production of balance sheet reconciliations packs
Achievements:
* Headcount reduction of 2 driven by centralisation of an MoD reporting requirement reporting within finance, through automation
* Completed first year of Degree with a first, while progressing within role
* Received CIMA global prize, placing 8th in the world for F2 exam
* Transferred to a problematic business unit to provide stability and improved internal service for the LTPA contact. Built relationships across the area to drive collaboration & more effective budgeting/forecasting outcomes
* Development of variance analysis to increase focus on material organisational drivers, through increased materiality threshold
* Centralised an MoD reporting requirement which previously resided within the business function. This allowed a time saving of 35 days per annum to be given back to the business which previously had been spent creating this report.
The industry dynamics did not facilitate progression and change within the organisation, which made it challenging looking for the next opportunity to grow and develop further. Commercially the organisation was notoriously difficult to influence as a financial stakeholder looking to add value beyond processes. With the majority of commercial decisions being made at a very senior level, opportunities from this angle were limited. As a result, a position in a B-2-C environment was sought in order to explore its suitability.
