EC&I Engineer
DelaControl.
(Contract)
My role in this contract is to control and manage the design of critical EC&I aspects of the Platform Management System (PMS) for use on future Royal Navy Warships. I am the lead
EC&I engineer on several PMS sub-systems and I also provide an interface between the safety and EC&I teams; due to my experience in both areas. This often involves advising other
designers on how the system should be constructed to gain compliance with the safety case and to meet good safety engineering practices.
During this role I have been able to use my knowledge and experience to provide several
simplifications of system designs (with no compromise on functionality) which has resulted in reduced costs and an improvement in delivery dates.
To summarise, my responsibilities in this role include:
• Development of a DOORS database to identify and track applicable requirements.
• Providing technical oversight to hardware designers.
• Review of supplier drawings and documentation.
• Production of high-level policy documents to enable consistent designs from various
suppliers.
• Authoring and verifying of key design substantiation documents.
• Management of suppliers.

job
Controls and Safety Engineer
DelaControl Ltd.
(Contract)
My role on this contract was to design and develop control and safety systems for use on high-
value machines within the manufacturing industry. I undertook this role to further develop my
C&I capabilities whilst also learning a new aspect of safety engineering (machinery safety).
On the control and automation side of this role I undertook reviews of customer requirements to develop a concise Functional Design Specification (FDS) which myself and other designers
use to prepare PLC and HMI software on Rockwell platforms. I then undertook the hands-on
commissioning of these systems at sites all over the world, this included a large amount of electrical fault finding. This experience has provided me an excellent opportunity to see
automation projects through a full cradle-to-grave lifecycle.
On the safety side of this role I led a small safety team in helping the client to substantiate
compliance with the relevant sections of the Machinery Directive. To this end, I have led
numerous multi-disciplinary risk assessments (utilising ISO 12100). As an output of these
assessments I have led the development of all required control system-based safeguards.
Various safety systems have been developed and substantiated to ISO 13849-1. System
reliability reports have been developed using SISTEMA software (and backed-up with hand calculations) to provide an auditable compliance trail.

job
Nuclear Safety / EC&I Engineer
Atkins.
My role within Atkins involved the production of Nuclear Safety and EC&I deliverables for a
variety of clients, with an emphasis on Safety Cases and Probabilistic Safety Assessments
(PSA).
A large part of my time with Atkins was spent on secondment at HMNB Devonport, providing
safety case support for the conceptual design of new nuclear facilities. This role involved
assessing postulated designs for there suitability to support a robust nuclear safety case. To
make judgements on designs, preliminary fault schedules were developed to allow for
comparisons of risk profiles between designs. A key aspect of this role was the collaborative
working with system designers to ensure the nuclear safety aspects of their systems were
known and understood and to provide input as to how the systems may be designed to achieve
robust compliance with the requirements.
My final role for Atkins was a long-term secondment into EDF Barnwood, working within the
Design Authority branch on a variety of EC&I and safety case tasks. In this role I was the Atkins Safety Case lead for HYA/HAR and produced various deliverables in this area. A key
project I delivered and project managed was 2017/18 Safety Case Health Reviews. This
project required me to gain intimate knowledge of numerous complex safety cases and to build
relationships with each of the safety case area leads. This project was delivered on time and to budget. The final project in my secondment involved leading the design substantiation
(mechanical and electrical) of a new nitrogen injection and pipework trace heating system,
used for emergency reactor shutdowns. This project involved reviewing large volumes of supplier documentation to ascertain whether compliance with the requirements had been
achieved. This project culminated in the production of several large deliverables which were
well received by the client.
To summarise, my responsibilities in this role included:
• Applying a strong safety case knowledge to develop complex cases and to produce
engineering changes which are key to allowing stations to continue operating.
• Design substantiation of large, safety critical systems. This involves liaison with many
stakeholders to ensure the design is meeting all requirements placed upon it.
• Design of control systems for both safety and non-safety related plant.
• Development of high-level control philosophies for reactor shutdown systems.
• Production of safety and reliability deliverables including Fault Trees, Event Trees and Failure Modes and Effects analysis.
• Performing an interface role with the EC&I and Nuclear Safety teams within Atkins due
to my strong experience in both disciplines. This often involves taking a lead role on
projects that contain elements of the two disciplines.
• Qualification of SMART instruments to EDF guidelines and procedures.
• Development of a nuclear safety workstream. This involves building relationships with clients, identifying issues that Atkins can help with and offering them tailored solutions.
• Man-management of junior engineers, industrial placement and summer students.
This involves general day-to-day people management tasks and ensuring that they are
provided with all the right skills and tools to complete the tasks asked of them.
• The proposal and oversight of work packages, this includes management of cost
against budget, schedules, reporting and client engagement.
• Gap analysis of system design versus IEC 61508.
