I'm offering
I am a creative specialist who’s services have been concentrated, yet, not limited to the World’s of Branding, Corporate Identity, Marketing & Advertising. During the last 19+ years Two Smoking Barrels Ltd (my trading name) has acted as a trusted creative partner to many larger well known industry-leading creative agencies by way of fulfilling their production & graphic requirements when they need the extra resources.
Ultimately our goal is to help create new brands & rejuvenate old ones. To produce
& supply our clients everything from conceptual presentations right through to implementation & production of artwork assets and designs.

Working with companies like these has allowed for varying degrees of input on many different projects. For instance Stand out projects like Lloyds Bank’s Welcome Walls & Meeting Room Panels. The concept based on their strap line of ‘For The Journey’, I zoned the country off into areas & created different landscapes for each of the zones. The idea being the graphics would represent a journey across Britain from John O’Groats to Lands End. These artworks would form the base for local landmarks to be added for each branch giving them a real local feel.
I was also heavily involved with creation of the brand guidelines for Virgin Media with the team at Wolff Olins & the rebrand of Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) both of which I created assets, colour tests, visualisations, graphics plus I populated the guideline documents themselves from scratch.
Further collaborations with the likes of Made Thought on highly detailed & complex packaging artworks such as Stella McCartney’s POP Fragrance range & Bombay Sapphire gift box packs were technically challenging yet ultimately rewarding.
Imagination kept me busy for quite some time with me producing large format graphics for vinyl production on their various exhibition events in the motor industry & more. Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls Royce, Shell, Cannon, Lego, Asics being the main clients I dealt with on a regular basis. My favourite project with the team was probably the Formula E Paris Autoshow exhibition which was a mix of general artwork for print, large format vinyl artwork, retouching & visualisation.
As well as helping some of the big players with their exciting client briefs I had some of my own smaller yet equally rewarding projects for little start-ups over the years. One of my favourite things is to give people big agency quality at reasonable rates, something that a lot of people promise but very few deliver on & its always great to see people's reaction when they receive their designs in a presentation all worked up.

My experience
2004 - ?
freelance
Founder / Managing Director / Creative Director / Senior Artworker / Retoucher / Tea Boy
TWO SMOKING BARRELS LTD.
The day to day for the last 19+ years has been interesting & fulfilling. One day may be about working on a PowerPoint deck for the US Government on behalf of a client & the next a piece of artwork for a tobacco company or a small startup’s stationery. Obviously as a small business the in house roles are varied & wide, having to do everything including the dull things such as the accounts & all the admin. Quite different from the corporate world of previous employment.
Freelancing has enabled the experience of sharing different company values & best practices. Learning new ways of approaching things. Being involved in so many wonderful teams over the last 19+ years has been amazing.

POP Stella McCartney - Made Thought
TWO SMOKING BARRELS LTD.
Made Thought called us in to create a number of packaging artworks for one of their most prestigious clients, Stella McCartney. The fragrance ‘POP’ needed to have all the sizes and variants artworked from the design files. There were many elements to be included and considered in creating these artworks. Each one included CMYK plus x2 Spot Pantones®, a debossing plate and embossing plate a UV Varnish and a foil.
We were also asked by the guys at Made Thought, to document the artworks that we had created in a design manual format, so that the producers of the packaging could see exactly how the artworks had been produced and could locate the assets readily and understand what standards were expected for various elements of the production process. The manual went into fine detail on size, construction, materials etc.

Lloyds TSB - Allen International
TWO SMOKING BARRELS LTD.
We were commissioned by Allen International to develop for Lloyds, a concept based on their strap line of ‘For The Journey’, Starting by zoning the country off into areas and creating different landscapes for each of the zones. The idea being the graphics would represent a journey across Britain from John O’Groats to Lands End. These artworks would form the base for local landmarks, to be added for each branch. 2 years and 200 artworks were produced offsite.
Part of the work was to research the local area for each branch, and offer the client some rough choices as to what landmarks would work well together in the composition. Once the choice had been agreed, they were sent off to a CGIcompany in China, We then directed their staff on the creative representation of each building until it was perfect. Finally, we inserted the finished landmarks into the scene and created shadows and grass etc to bring it all to life.
On top of the 200 artworks for the ‘Welcome Walls’ there was 10 ‘meeting Room’ panels which all had to follow on from one and other. They would represent the journey from one end of the country to the other and would be situated in meeting rooms across the country. The landmarks on these panels did not change from location to location, these artworks were generic in nature.
Each local branch was a different size and therefore allocation of meeting room space differed from branch to branch. In order to keep the look and feel consistant across the brand, each branch chose from the meeting room deck, between 1 and 10 panels to fit their space. Making sure to chose panels that sat next to each other.

My job here changed from artworker to creative artworker to production manager in 6 months. Then after a number of years producing the vast majority of assets for our clients I became in addition to that role a key component in the new business team by being the main PowerPoint presentation guy in-house. Later I jumped ship and joined the design team producing many business-winning pitches.
