job
Development and Technical Support Manager
Nortech Control Systems.
As a member of the Senior Management team (4 person - Company Owner, General Manager, Non-Executive Financial Director and myself), I
took part in all weekly, monthly and quarterly board meetings.
• Reported statistics and progress related to the two teams that I managed to discuss all areas of the business having input to all major
decisions including company mission and purpose, company direction, company strategy and planning, new recruitment and budget.
• Although promoted to Development Manager in 2009, from the day that I arrived officially as a Firmware/Software Engineer, having worked
for much larger companies, I immediately identified that the company needed a much more formal approach to development and had no
systems in place for testing, change control and internal signoff, code management / backup in a repository and security so acted unofficially
as a manager from day one.
• Having introduced many new processes, systems and direction to the department already, this led to my official promotion to Development
Manager despite being the youngest engineer in the company which required strong leadership initially to harmonize the department
especially as more senior engineers than me and the Technical Director now reported to me.
• Responsibility for all areas of development, I was able to employ a hands-on approach due to the small team so continued developing FW / SWin C/C#, project managed all projects myself making all decisions on the technologies used, project planning, allocation of resource,
budgeting and predicting / maintaining deadlines.
• Also asked to lead the inefficient Technical Support team, making changes to improve efficiency, effectiveness and the reputation of the
department such as logging of all customer interactions, tracking of repairs, introduction of advance replacements and established the use of SMART goals.
• Handled support calls and email interaction with more difficult clients in order to diffuse intensifying situations, investigated escalated
unsolved issues where my product and development knowledge could be utilised to solve problems and took ownership of all communication
at senior management level with clients where escalation had occurred at their end.
• Handled all relationships new and old with 3rd party suppliers.
• Created a detailed successful application to unlock a significant amount of Welsh Assembly funding linked to new and unique product
development in Wales for project costs and additional recruitment.

Senior Software Engineer
Siemens previously Bewator.
Employed with initial remit of understanding the code and establishing the faults that were currently present in a design acquired by the company of an externally designed product (CCTV dome camera) at the time unsaleable (periodically stopping movement on preset automatic tours) also adding new functionality and the necessary protocols to work with Bewator equipment, with the company having no
documentation or information on the firmware written in assembler that was outdated and I had never used.
• Having worked on the poor bought in CCTV dome design and learned many lessons on how not to do things, my biggest achievement was
design of Bewator's flagship video product Solaris (brand new high specification CCTV Pan / Tilt / Zoom dome camera), the main product of interest when we were acquired by Siemens that was rebadged, with the branding and supporting documentation changed to Siemens.
• Wrote code for control of many devices such as DC and stepper motor control, undertook max speed / acceleration calculations based on
motors and gearing, control of 3rd party camera modules (Sony, Hitachi, Samsung), positional calculation, on monitor text insertion, menu
design with support for multiple languages and was given license to implement many original features of my own and for the concept of the innovative XTU unit supplied with Solaris, I was jointly attributed with a patent.
• Also worked on development of other embedded C based products with PC testing tools written in Delphi and C# such as CCTV physical
keyboards, implementation of 3rd party protocols, video matrix switching systems, digital video recorders and software-based applications for
Windows used for monitoring video and camera control.
• My final project at Siemens was working on the design of an IP CCTV keyboard allowing control of IP cameras, IP monitors, IP DVRs, analogue
devices (with digital video encoding) creating a virtual video matrix representing a shift from analogue to digital technologies developed across sites between Cwmbran and Karlsruhe in Germany with a large touch screen display capable of displaying video following Siemen's
extensive product lifecycle process PEP2005, for which I received training.
