Head of UAT Practice
HSBC.
I spearheaded the newly created User Acceptance Test (UAT) Practice within Retail Banking & Wealth Management (RBWM) Business Transformation at HSBC to provide a more professional Test Management approach to UAT. I developed a scalable Target Operating Model (TOM) for the Practice, which had the ability to then be deployed globally across the Bank, including the creation of the infrastructure, processes and procedures aligned with the Bank's move toward Agile. The UAT Practice provided Test Management consultancy where none had been before and within 3 months of launch was 100% self-funding. The next phase was then to Identify opportunities for automation which we started in December 2018.
February 2018 - December 2018 HSBC Head of UAT Practice
Project: UAT Practice - UK Transformation
Application: Cross Bank Projects
Responsibilities & Achievements
I headed up the newly created User Acceptance Test (UAT) Practice within Retail Banking & Wealth Management (RBWM) Business Transformation at HSBC to provide a more professional Test Management approach to UAT.
Initially, with the assistance of two test managers, I managed the creation of the Practice's infrastructure including: engagement model, internal processes & procedures, all aligned with the Bank's move toward Agile, and the introduction of behaviour driven development by standardising the way UAT scenarios were documented. We employed the Given-When-Then formula as a template for writing acceptance tests with a view of being able to port the scenarios into Gherkin executable specifications for future automation.
As part of the set-up of the UAT Practice I created the Target Operating Model (TOM) which was designed to be scalable so as to provide a basis for a global roll-out to ensure UAT was approached in a consistent manner and maximised efficiencies of scale.
The UAT Practice provided Test management leadership accountability to ensure that every release was fit for purpose and working with SMEs, Project Managers and Business Analysts, UAT was planned, prepared and then executed in a more structured way than had been before. We also worked closely with IT colleagues so that there was a tighter integration of the dependencies and risk in the lead up to UAT execution.
Once operational I then managed a small team of 2 Test Managers & 6 Test Co-ordinators to provide UAT governance and control to all Change Delivery/Transformation projects across HSBC UK that utilised the UAT Practice. We were accountable to track its progress by reporting key point indicators (KPIs) monthly and we continued to evolve the Practice itself moving towards more automation initially by using Cucumber (a tool that allows the creation of automated software tests from Gherkin syntax) and embedding Agile practices within our daily work.

Principal Consultant
Certeco Consulting Limited.
Project: National Trust System Simplification Programme
Application: Agresso Financial Management, Omnico Point-of-Sale
Software: Enterprise Tester, MS Project, MS Office.
The System Simplification Programme (SSP) was a three-year programme to improve supporter loyalty and reduce internal inefficiency by modernising IT systems and simplifying operational processes, as well as deliver better management information. The programme saw the introduction of a new website with member self-service functionality, a new finance system, a new procurement system, new point-of-sale tills and new marketing and analytics systems.
Responsibilities & Achievements
Certeco Consulting provided a managed service to the National Trust's System Simplification Programme covering business change and user acceptance testing (UAT). As the principal consultant I was responsible for the day-to-day management of the managed service to the National Trust account. I had responsibility for a team of over 20 test consultants both on and off-site working across three work-streams each one with its own test lead reporting to me.
I had budgetary control of all Certeco consultants who covered various work-streams, including: Finance, Point-of-Sale (PoS) and System Integration Testing (SIT). During my time I also took the opportunity to mentored junior members and facilitated personal development plans of the team and also acted as a central point of contact between Certeco and the National Trust at programme director level.
At the start of the programme, I established processes and procedures for the test team which formed the framework within which the test consultants operated. The test strategy that I created formed the framework within which all testing was carried out. Furthermore, on the off-site location, with the assistance of 3 test analyst, we established a point-of-sale model office for both the fixed and hand-held terminals.
The SIT phase covered the integration of new PoS terminals, the new financial systems, UNit-4's Agresso and with Microsoft Dynamics NAV for the stock control of the restaurants. Interchange files that were used between various internal systems including The General Ledger. These were first simulated using a third-party tool which created interface files in any given format based in test data held in Excel.
The UAT phase was primarily manual testing and covered the point-of-sale terminals and the new web site. With the assistance of two test analysts we created a model office at the off-site location that consisted of the desktop and hand held PoS terminals. These were used to test all functionality that the new PoS system was introducing as well as ensuring contact and contactless card payments processed correctly. Although the new web site was tested manually we also introduced a level of automation using Selenium.
This was a multi-vendor Programme and prior to my arrival Certeco was not performing as best it could. Apart from managing the test function itself I also had the task of improving the performance of the consultancy overall, which I achieved before my departure. I turned the account around from one where Certeco was a poor performing 3rd party supplier to one of the best for SSP.
