Union Square Software is a SMB in Nottingham. Having developed an industry leading collaboration tool, they have increased in size year on year. This ongoing growth meant that the Director, whom was looking after IT, was getting overwhelmed, and so a position was tendered for an IT Manager. I was the first person in this position.
My role as IT manager was an all encompassing role, looking after all aspects of IT at Union Square.
I had a very hands on approach to my work. I rarely had a need (or desire) to outsource, as I would always attempt to learn and keep knowledge internally to the organisation. This approach has also allowed the IT budget to be better directed, with cost savings.
After three years at Union Square I have improved all aspects of Union Square's IT infrastructure. Notably -
• Creation and implementation of an SMS alerting program to monitor server stability
• Training Environment - I have setup a brand new Training Centre for our customers, using Thin Client technology and instant roll-back of environments using Virtual Technology Snap-shotting.
I also assisted other members of staff with customer consultancy, discussing technical issues, both hardware and software. Key elements of customer work were to offer consultancy before software purchase, ensuring available hardware was up to spec. I would then visit the customers site to install software. In some cases, a customer would have limited internal IT support (due to business size), which meant I would often have to unravel unfamiliar IT setups in order to perform the install. I would also liaise directly with customers for ongoing support issues, as well as version upgrades of software.
